Founding of Gabbitas
Initially called Robinson, Gabbitas & Thring, Gabbitas was established in 1873 as the first known educational agency. It originally operated to recruit schoolmasters for public schools in England and soon expanded to include recruiting headteachers. Historic figures, including Evelyn Waugh, H.G. Wells, and Amy Johnson, have sought employment through Gabbitas, among others. After several ownership and name changes, the firm was renamed Gabbitas, Thring & Co. in 1904. By the mid-20th century, Thring’s name was no longer included, and the company continues to operate today as Gabbitas.
The Role of Edward Thring
Edward Thring (1821-1887) was an exceptional headmaster whose progressive ideas on education reshaped the British schooling system. Born into a clerical family, Thring was educated at Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. In 1853, he became the headmaster of Uppingham School, a position he held for over three decades. His tenure at Uppingham is often regarded as transformative, during which he implemented significant reforms that prioritised the holistic development of students.

Thring’s Legacy
Thring introduced smaller class sizes and a more personalised approach to teaching, with emphasis on individual attention. He also advocated for a broad curriculum that included subjects like music, art, and physical education, previously neglected in favour of classical studies. Thring’s methods laid the groundwork for what we now recognise as a well-rounded education. His influence extended beyond Uppingham as a founding member of the Headmasters’ Conference (HMC), setting high standards for independent schools. His writings, particularly “The Theory and Practice of Teaching,” have inspired generations of educators to adopt more compassionate and effective teaching methods.
