Lynne’s Education Journey
From prep school in China to school in the UK and a place at Cambridge University.
Established in 1873, Gabbitas has tutored everyone from young actors in the Harry Potter films to members of the Royal Family. We only work with tutors who have a passion for education and a strong academic background (often already qualified teachers or Oxbridge graduates), are security checked, demonstrate strong organisational skills and punctuality, are engaging and dynamic and so have the ability to inspire the talent with which they work.
At Gabbitas we will find the best match and ensure that all appropriate checks have been made on your behalf covering references, qualifications and importantly DBS checks; a tailored plan with clearly defined goals will then be agreed.
We are a member of The Tutors’ Association and ensure our business and our tutors fully comply with the Association’s Codes of Practice. Our tutoring services have also been reviewed by The Good Schools Guide – read their excellent review of our services,

Residential tuition is where a tutor supports a student for an intensive period of study during holidays or in term-time (after the student’s normal school day), anywhere in the world. This may be for as little as a week or as long as a year, or even a long weekend. The tutor would normally live in the family home or nearby.
Residential tuition makes it easier for a tutor to build a meaningful relationship and strong rapport with your child. It provides the time and space necessary to respond to their academic needs, rather than just performing triage on a certain area. It also allows for ideas and techniques to be taught in depth, and practised and revisited without the pressure of having to complete it within the limited time periods provided by hourly tutoring. With residential tutoring there are no long gaps between lessons, meaning each session can build seamlessly on the last and help accelerate progress.
Gabbitas residential tutoring is tailored to you and your family. Our tutors are very flexible and will work around any other activities that are part of your schedule.
With a growing demand for online tuition, Gabbitas aims to leverage tech innovation to bring value to clients from around the world. Online Tutoring clients still benefit from a tailored matching service, which ensures individual student needs are met by the most appropriate tutors. All the appropriate checks have been made including covering references, qualifications and DBS checks.
Gabbitas works with elite clients from around the world, who travel frequently or are relocating to and out of the UK. Home schooling allows for a bespoke approach to education to suit the full spectrum of your child’s academic and extra-curricular needs.
Gabbitas understands that the decision to home school your child is always based on unique circumstances, and our experts always approach each new client with a fresh set of eyes.
For families relocating to the UK, securing a place at a top school can be complicated by need for advance applications. Gabbitas can ensure your child is prepared for independent school entrance and admissions exams, covering all aspects of academic performance.
For families moving outside of the UK or travelling frequently, home tuition ensures academic continuity for the child and a more succeful re-integration into the school system afterwards.
Many good schools in the UK require potential students to pass an entrance test/exam and an interview in order to consider them for admission. The entrance exam may be a standard test set by ISEB (the Independent Schools Examination Board), called the Common Entrance Exam, or one set individually by the school. In both cases each school sets its own pass mark – the more selective a school is the higher the pass mark will be.
If your child already attends an independent junior school (a preparatory school), then the school should have given your child some coaching for the exam but they may still benefit from additional support. If your child attends a state school and is hoping to move to an independent or grammar school, then it would be sensible to prepare your child for what is ahead.
If the exam is written by the school, it is likely to include:
Sometimes part of the exam is referred to as a ‘reasoning’ test (verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning) or ‘quantitative reasoning’ (the testing of problem solving questions using mathematical skills).
If schools use the Common Entrance Exam, core subjects are maths, English and science. Students at 13+ may also be required to take a paper from a variety of other subjects – French, German, Spanish, geography, history, religious studies.
Gabbitas tutors have a proven track record of successfully preparing children for entry into leading grammar and independent schools. We provide an entrance examination programme and tuition for all entry points including 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+. We can also help provide advice and guidance on the most suitable school for your child.
Our highly qualified tutors will guide and support your child by preparing them for all elements including verbal and non-verbal reasoning and interview practice. Our unique programme includes:
Summer holiday courses are a fantastic way for children, teenagers and adults to take part in unique experiences, meet interesting new people and broaden their minds. Whether you are looking for an educational, adventurous or relaxing trip, there is something out there for every child.
Each year the demand for these courses grows, and with increased demand comes increased supply. The number and variety of courses available are constantly multiplying, and with each offering their own trademarks and special features, the choice is now so vast that it is difficult for parents and students to know whether they have truly chosen the best course for them.
We use our extensive knowledge to ensure students find the ideal course to meet their needs. We pride ourselves on our close relationships with the very best educational providers in the UK, but as an educational consultancy our main priority is to ensure the happiness and prosperity of our students.
Our consultants will do the hard work for you. They discover exactly what it is you are looking for and offer you a choice of courses from amongst the thousands on the market which best suit your needs. From English language lessons to adventure holidays – and everything in between – we can find the perfect course for your child.
The long holidays can make it difficult for your child to keep on top of school work and stay on track for the year ahead. So why not take a tutor on holiday with you? At Gabbitas we provide personalised holiday tuition programmes that can be incorporated within your family’s holiday itinerary. This means your child can learn at times that are the most convenient for everyone.
Holiday tuition can provide a fantastic way of having the time to work through basic concepts for a topic without the time limit of normal hourly tuition. It gives the student the space to ask every question they want without the pressure of the classroom environment, and to go over it often enough for their confidence to build.
There are brilliant teaching resources available online now and it massively enriches the learning environment that might otherwise be a hotel room, cafe half way up a mountain, or a patio by the sea.
Gabbitas provides personalised holiday tuition programmes that can be incorporated within your family’s holiday itinerary. Kirsty Reed, Senior Tutor Consultant at Gabbitas Education, comments, “Having a tutor come into a family’s life for a week or more can be helpful in many other ways too. They’re often well educated, ambitious young people who act as mentors for the students. For students who aren’t keen on school it can be a real boost to see someone who is openly a bit geeky and genuinely loves their range of subjects.” Gabbitas Education tutor, Tadhgh Barwell O’Connor (a Cambridge graduate with significant tutoring experience), comments about his holiday assignments: “While the academic goal is clear from the outset, so much learning can take place during the ‘down time’ with the tutor too. I really enjoy taking part in family activities if it’s appropriate for the time and place.”
Gabbitas tutors are available for residential and holiday tuition to families all over the world. See some of the Tutoring clients’ testimonials.
